This project is a collaboration between the University of Maryland and the University of Chicago to develop virtual professional development for teachers across the country that helps them learn how to use the Scratch Encore computer science curriculum and adapt it for their local contexts. WestEd serves as the external evaluator for this project.
About Scratch Encore
Scratch Encore is a platform for creating customized, culturally responsive materials.
Developed and refined over 4 years through a research-practice partnership with Chicago Public Schools, Scratch Encore is a culturally relevant, multiyear computing curriculum with both robust instructional materials and teacher materials. The curriculum uses a research-backed instructional approach to sequence and introduce learners to computer science (CS) content . Encore currently introduces content through three distinct, culturally responsive themes and provides a cohesive sequencing of activities and clearly identified learning goals. These serve as a productive skeleton for teachers to use in creating new, culturally responsive lessons for their students that harmonize with the existing curriculum.
